Well, where to start? I can't start at the beginning, because I don't remember back that far. Let Me Start by telling you about my family. I have a set of the most wonderful and caring parents. Yes, that's right I said it! The are probably the parents that everyone wishes they had. I have a brother, Nick, who can be a really big pain in the ass, but he's cool most of the time.
When I was back in high school, one of my teachers got me interested in theatre. We have a group in our town called Command Performances, and they bring touring shows to my city. As a student of his, he invited me to help load in and run these professional shows (in 7-12 grades), and ever since, I have been a technical theatre nut.
For many years, about 3, I spent my summers working at a Boy Scout summer camp. The camp was called Camp Portaferry, and it is located in the Adirondack Mountains. My first summer at the camp was spent as a counselor in the nature center, and the next two years I spent as the camp store manager.
Upon graduating from high school I decided that I would enroll at a community college. I choose Genesee Community College for their great theatre department, and I needed to find out for myself if Theatre was really what I wanted to do . I spent 2 1/2 years there and learned a great deal. In May 1997, I graduated from Genesee Community College with an A.A.Degree in Theatre Arts.
In the summer, between semesters, I really didn't want to move back home for three months (home was 4 hours away), so instead of moving, I found a job that was close to my college. For the summers of 1995 and 1996 I was employed by Darien Lake Theme Park and Camping Resort, as a ride host. Yes, that's right, I actually got to control the amusement park rides (scary). I was always a very big fan of amusement parks, and I had always wanted to work at one. So when the chance came I jumped on it. I had two great summers and met a lot of new and different people.
At the end of the 1996 season at Darien Lake, Me and a group of friends decided to take a trip to another park that wasn't too far away. This trip would be my first time visiting Cedar Point. We drove 6 1/2 hours to Sandusky, Ohio and visited the park. I was so impressed that I requested an application. At the time I wasn't too serious and I didn't think they would ever hire me.
After the fall semester of the `96-`97 school year I was still three credits short of graduating but I could not afford to spend anymore time at GCC. I made a deal with an instructor to let me take a class through the mail in order to get my last three credits. In the meantime, I moved back home with my parents and started looking for a job. It was Christmas time and most people were getting ready to lay off some employees, and I had no luck. About January 20th, I got a letter from Cedar Point and it had an application inside. I filled it out and immediately sent it back to them. Sometime near the end of February, I called Cedar Point to find out my status and they transferred me to the ride manager who in turn hired me over the phone. I packed my stuff and moved to Ohio for the summer. I spent from April 22- August 24 working at the best amusement park in the world. I met and worked with 4,500 other employees from around the world, and had the best summer of my life!
Also while at CP, I started filling out paperwork so that I could transfer and go back to college. I got accepted to my #1 school, the State University of New York at Oswego. All 62 of my credits transferred and I am now a Junior technical theatre major.
After my first year at the new college, I decided to try and get a job at Cedar Point in the entertainment department. I was successfully hired as a backstage technician for the summer.
After Cedar Point closed for the winter, I once again returned to school, to finish up my last year. I have had a chance to participate in a few shows while at Oswego State. The most impressive was the 1998 honors production. The play, RAISED IN CAPTIVITY was produced and staged by all students. I was the chosen lighting designer. It was a lot of fun, and I also got to meet the playwright, Nicky Silvers. He signed my copy of the script including the statement "poor poor pukin' boy"...another story for another time. I was scheduled to graduate from Oswego In May 1999, but just like before, I ended up three credits short. Well, I decided to not return to school right away, but instead to put it off for a while, and get a job.
I went back to Cedar Point for the summer, and decided that I wanted to work on a roller-coaster. I choose the Raptor as it is one of my favorite rides. It was a wonderful summer, and I would not give it up for anything.
Well, cedar point is closed for the winter, and I am not at school, but sitting at home looking for a job. I am planning on returning to Cedar Point again this summer, unless I get another job elsewhere in my career field.
I returned to Cedar Point for the summer of 2000. Having been hired to work on the Raptor for the summer, I was looking forward to having another great Cedar Point Summer. When I arrived at the park for the summer, I got a nice little surprise. Upon checking in my area manager told me not to finish checking in and to go talk to the vice-president of park operations first. While totally wondering what was going on, I went to his office, where he let me know that there was a position in the Technical Services Department that had become available as a temporary position, about 30 days, and he asked if I would like to fill the position. I accepted the position, and started the next day. My role would be to assist the department in setting up sound systems throughout the park, rides, restaurants, and so on. Thirty days past and I was still working in the Tech Services Department. Needless to say, I was now going to be staying in the department and assisting them throughout the summer. I got to do things like climb to the top of coasters and install and or fix equipment, and sit around during operating hours waiting for things to break so that I could go and fix them.
Towards the end of the summer a few friends and I, were trying to figure out what to do with ourselves after the park closed for the season. We decided to fly to Orlando and check out all the tourist spots and see if we could actually get hired on. We came down the week before our contract was up, and found jobs and a place to live.
We then got back on the plane, went to finish the last weekend at cedar point, and then moved off to our new jobs in Orlando.
I got hired to work at the Downtown Disney Complex as a merchandise host.
After Living 7 moths with the people I moved here with , I was ready to venture out on my own to try and find a place to live closer to work.(as I don't have a car) I am very glad i did decide not to renew my lease with them, because they broke it and ended up moving back home. I found a nice little place to live with a couple of friends, about 10 mins from work in Kissimmee, FLA.
I am currently still living there, still working at Downtown Disney, and still enjoying my time in Central Florida.
